Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council (AH&MRC) is dedicated to assisting Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) across the four regions (Metropolitan, Northern, Southern and Western) of NSW to ensure they have access to an adequately resourced and skilled workforce enabling the ACCHSs to provide their local Aboriginal communities with holistic and culturally appropriate primary health care and Aboriginal health-related services.

About the role:
As the Project Officer, you will directly report to the Director of Intelligence and will be responsible for developing preliminary policy advice on complex and high-profile policy areas that impact the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Sector in NSW. You will also lead the AH&MRC’s contributions to the NSW Aboriginal Cancer Primary Care Program (the Program) which is to be delivered in partnership with the Cancer Institute NSW.
This position will contribute to the implementation of Closing the Gap initiatives outlined in the NSW Jurisdictional Implementation Plan. This includes being an active member of the NSW Coalition of Aboriginal Peak Organisations (CAPO) and representing the AH&MRC on all relevant platforms.
Key accountabilities:
- Plan and manage the delivery of the Aboriginal Cancer Primary Care Program under the guidance of the Closing the Gap Reference Group (CTGRG).
- Coordinate and provide secretarial support to the NSW Aboriginal Cancer Primary Care – Closing the Gap Reference Group (CTGRG).
- Develop and manage shared working arrangements with the project delivery partner, Cancer Institute NSW.
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including the AH&MRC’s member services to facilitate their engagement in and contribution to the implementation of this initiative.
- Draft and contribute to ongoing program documentation including status updates, reports, budgets and discussion, achievements, and ensure stakeholders are informed and up-to-date
- Developing timely advice, detailed briefings, resource materials, reports, correspondence, and submissions on a range of complex policy issues.
- Undertaking research and policy development processes to influence policy and/or programs affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
- Representing the AH&MRC and its Member Services at Closing the Gap-related workshops and platforms.
Qualifications and experience:
- Minimum tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent experience in health, social sciences or related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience working in public health, policy, or research in the context of Aboriginal health.
- Demonstrated commitment and capacity to promote the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Essential requirements:
- Demonstrated commitment and capacity to promote the rights interests and aspirations of Aboriginal people;
- Demonstrated experience in community engagement in an Aboriginal community context;
- Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships with Aboriginal peoples and communities and to collaborate to achieve their objectives, including the ability to liaise, consult and negotiate with a diverse range of clients and stakeholders.
- Effective project management skills with well-developed time management skills to plan workload, prioritise and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the issues that impact Aboriginal people related to health and other social determinants.
- Demonstrated experience in policy analysis, policy development and project management.
- Demonstrated skills in dealing with confidential and sensitive information in a professional manner.
- Demonstrated experience and ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to hold a National Police Check and Working with Children Check.
- Ability to travel state-wide to the NSW ACCHS’s on a regular basis.
